Chapter 28

Safety in Numbers

Headlights woke Josiah from a fitful sleep. He peeked out the window.

“Hey, Morris, someone is out there. Looks like a state police car.”

Morris grabbed his jeans and shirt. “Be back.”

“I’m coming with you.” Josiah followed Morris into the sultry night.

“Evenin’ officer,” Morris said. “Somethin’ I can do for you?”

“Just need a full gas tank. Sorry for the late stop. I was on patrol up the highway. Saw something in the bushes. With the disappearances around here, I investigated. Next thing I know, here I am.”

Morris shot a worried look to Josiah. “You don’t say. Let me get the pumps going so you can get on your way. Would you keep the officer company, Josiah?”

“Gladly. Well, Officer”—Josiah leaned in and looked at the man’s nametag—“Andrews, how is your evening going?”

“Been quiet. Usually is on these back roads. You lived here long?”

“Oh, no. I’m just visiting.”

“Relatives here?”

“Friends.”

“You know there’ve been some people gone missing, right?”

“Yes, I do. Very tragic.”

“You haven’t seen anyone suspicious?” Officer Andrews eyed Josiah. “When did you get here, anyway?”

Josiah laughed. “Yesterday. Came with Morris. This is his mom’s place.”

The officer relaxed.

Morris stuck the gas nozzle in the tank. “Let me get your windows for you while you’re here.”

“A full service station, huh?”

“Small town manners.”

“Yep. Describes Bordman’s alright.”

“You come around here often?” Josiah asked.

“Nah. I drive through once a week.”

“I bet the people here are relieved.”

“I always feel like I’m intruding.”

Josiah smiled. “Small town manners.”

“Sums it up.”

“Came to twenty dollars and ninety-six cents.”

The officer dug into his pocket and handed Morris a twenty dollar bill. He dug in the other pocket and pulled out change. He counted out the exact amount. “Thanks for helping me out.”

“Anytime, officer.”

The officer revved his engine and slowly pulled out onto the two lane asphalt.

“He’ll be alright?” Josiah asked.

“Think so. Can’t do anything about it if he isn’t. Let’s get some sleep.”

Josiah watched the patrol car disappear into the early morning darkness.
